What Happens to Your Mobile Home Insurance When You Move Your Home

Moving a mobile home is a bigger undertaking than loading up a moving truck. Whether you’re relocating across Louisiana or just down the road to a new lot, your mobile home insurance policy may not automatically follow you. Understanding what may change and what steps to take ahead of time can save you from a costly gap in coverage.

How Moving Affects Your Mobile Home Insurance white concrete building near green trees during daytime

Your mobile home insurance is typically tied to a specific location. When you move, your risk profile changes. Insurers can consider factors like local weather exposure, proximity to flood zones, crime rates and other details of the new site. A move can affect your premiums, your coverage terms, or even your eligibility with your current insurer.

In addition, your policy may not cover the home while it’s being transported. You may need a separate transit endorsement, sometimes called ”trip collision“ coverage, to cover the move itself.

Steps to Take Before Moving Your Mobile Home

Getting ahead of the paperwork can be beneficial. Here’s what to do:

  • Notify your insurer as soon as you have a confirmed new address and move date.
  • Ask specifically whether your current policy covers transit and what documentation is required.
  • Request a coverage review for the new location, since rates and available coverage may differ.
  • Confirm that your new lot meets your insurer’s requirements for set-up and tie-downs.
  • Update your policy’s effective date to align with your move.
